Track a South African passport or ID application from the USA

Embassy applications: follow up on status through the Home Affairs contact centre at hacc@dha.gov.za. Send your prepaid collection envelope only once the Embassy tells you the document is ready (postage not less than $10) [source].
Los Angeles Consulate: to have a passport returned by post, bring a prepaid self-addressed USPS or UPS envelope; FedEx is not accepted [source].
Expected timing differs by official source: six to eight weeks on the VFS Global page, and at least 6 to 8 months at the Embassy [source, source].
